Mustang: I love this train of comments. A harmless duel of wits and beliefs that will probably make better people of both of us.

The “onerous levies” I was referring to at this time would be the mandatory health insurance the new healthcare bill seems to impose, or the fine for not purchasing health care, or the possible imprisonment for non-fine payers. The worker takes home little enough to have the choice of income disposal taken away from him in this matter. A Socialist (Statist) will take his money and spread it around uselessly. A true Capitalist government will let him keep his money and let him make his own choice as to how it is expended.

Right now, I’m beginning to think that a simplistic definition of today’s Socialist is: “You are not responsible for anything, we’ll make all your decisions for you.” The Capitalist decision is: “You are responsible for yourself, your decisions, and your lifestyle.”

Mustang: Good points, but again a rehash of old movies on Native Americans. Another clunker that stuck out after I slept on it overnight, the archaic weapons used by the Earthlings after they developed space travel and the interface system for developing the avatars.

If you can get hold of a copy of “LITTLE BIG MAN”, you can see a great story of the Northern Cheyenne, and a fun story of American West history.

By the way, did you ever read the context of the quote in your original post? If so, you’ll find that Lincoln is referring to the relationship between labor and capital and is not referring to its relationship to government.

Self-employed individuals are the only ones that retain the fruits of their labor. Our country was built by self-employed people (mostly farmers), yet today, our pro-corporate laws make self-employment almost impossible. Unlike the self-employed, corporations must profit off the work of others.

Any true capitalist (business owner/employer), would know what I said is true. Yes we provide a sense of security for our employees, but they pay dearly for that security. Much as people in socialistic societies pay more in taxes for their security.

Nothing I said suggested workers should have to pay “onerous tax levies.” I am merely pointing out that we employers take much more from them before the government gets a chance to tax them.

Mustang doubts your Capitalist pedigree, and you misunderstand my definition of labor. If you do indeed own your own small business, you have put many hours of labor, love, and financial and marital risk into your business. You deserve to keep your fair share of the rewards you reap. As to your workers, you have, through your hard work, provided employment for them. Above small mandatory tax requirements, they should be able to retain as much of their wage as possible. It is not right that the government at any level should exact onerous tax levies so that the idle can live the same life as the worker. I think you are a fraud, just another socialist “getting rich off the work of others.”

I found this page while looking up the above Lincoln quote which is very socialistic indeed. As a small business owner, I know how little of a worker’s work is retained by the worker. We get as much as 90% of the fruits of labor. To worry about the government (the people) getting a percentage of the small amount we share with workers is laughable. You sir, are clearly not an actual capitalist or you’d know the statement to be correct and not favorably to capitalists like myself. We capitalists get rich off the work of others. It’s just that simple. The amount left over for the worker and government is a mere fraction of the fruits of labor.

I think you are on the right track here but we really should limit the vote to people who produce a useful commodity or promotes “the Progress of Science and useful Arts”. Not only would that exclude those who you seem to be classifying as undesirable; it excludes most of Wall Street. After all, all they do is push paper around searching for the latest get rich scheme. It would be fair to leave them out as they just create bubbles that always brings the economy down and necessitate bail outs.

Ironic, that quote is often used by Socialists. It can easily be interpreted to infer that Lincoln is critical of the capitalist model. He talks about those that labor not getting their fair share of what their labor yields. The quote is not a criticism of taxation and redistribution, but a criticism of employers/slaveowners unfairly exploiting laborers and leaving them subject while getting rich off of their yeild.

Reagan won the Cold War and peace has been achieved. Any military can tell you how big the change was. Russia is taking care of its nucs. You are right about the prize as a reaction against Bush. You get that what Reagan did wasn’t peaceful right? He created an arms race that made Russia go completely broke, and we are still dealing with the fallout of all of the potential nuclear weapons that could have fallen into the wrong hands after the collapse of the U.S.S.R.. Really in the end it isn’t so much about what Obama has done, it’s that the international community wants to thank us as Americans repudiating the Bush Administration by voting Obama in. The very election of Obama was such a swing in the momentum of increasing peace in the world that it had to be awarded by the committee. I agree that this movie was too long, but I thought it was very interesting. For instance I never knew of an Italian resistance, and someone else mentionedthe word “Informant” and they were right. If there was a resistance there was at least a few informants amongst them, i’ts human nature. It’s not right but some of us will sell our soul to the devil if it we think it will save our skin.

I was in grade school during the 70’s and not once was it ever mentioned to me in school that Black Men served in World War II. Hell I thought only white men fought the war according to the Movies, until my great grandmother showed me pictures of my great grandfather serving in that war. Are the Italians angry because Spike didn’t get their opinion on how the movie should have been written?
Well no one asked African-Americans their opinion when Hollywood made all of those war films without any Black Men in all those John Wayne war movies.
I’m sure we can all agree that the nazis were cruel and brutal if you didn’t go along with Hitler’s program , or if you were of another race, that it’s no big secret, he sucked and is probably hanging out with satan right now.

I agree with your sentiments but would offer the notion that it isn’t only the tree-hugging do-gooders who want this. Fox News had people yammering for the same thing when your march in D.C. was happening. Perhaps it’s more of an elitist thing, rather than a Red or Blue issue.

I do think you are being overly optimistic when you write our “national health system” - currently we don’t really have one. Perhaps that’s why so many elected officials don’t want reform?

I have recently retired and am happy to find others concerned about the direction of the country.
I have read “It Can’t Happen Here” written in 1935 by Sinclair Lewis and am halfway through “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. I am not scared, but I’m concerned. I recommend both books strongly.

The Constitution does not allow the people the luxury of the voter initiative for the federal ballot or to recall a member of Congress. The founders specifically wanted to remove pressures on honest men by the voters who placed them in office. What has developed is a Congress that is the best one that money can buy.
There are two paths by which the people can correct the mistakes their votes have put in office:
1. Call for a Constitutional Convention and change the document that allows what exists today or
2. Vote against the incumbent in November, 2010.
