University of Utah tonight proved that they are a real factor in the NCAA College Championships easily defeating tough Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, 31-17. Alabama had been rated Number One for five weeks. At 13-0, Utah is the only undefeated major college football team. The two teams who play for the championship next week have both lost one game. Florida beat Alabama by a similar score but had an unfortunate loss earlier in the year to some team that escapes my mind. Oklahoma, the nation’s highest scoring team, lost to Texas in their annual rivalry in Dallas.
In my mind, Oklahoma should play for the championship, not just because I’m a Sooner, Class of ‘66, but because of their awesome display of scoring power over their last five games. I would like to see them play Utah, but the BCS won’t have that option, ever, as long as the computers make the pairings. The Sooners have a huge, strong, and aggressive offensive line that just dominates play. The Utes have one of the fastest, toughest defensive lines I’ve seen in a long time. It would be an incredible matchup.
So, while I will hope for an Oklahoma victory next Thursday, in my heart of hearts, I have to think that maybe the UNDEFEATED Utah team that made Alabama look ineffective, should really have the rings and the title. Here’s a tip of my Sooner Stetson to the Utes of Utah!
